We recently embarked on an incredible journey to Chaco Canyon alongside youth from Laguna-Acoma High School and Walatowa High School. As we set off on our trip, excitement filled the air. The bus was abuzz with conversations, laughter, and a shared sense of anticipation. Our diverse group of indigenous youth came together, united by a common desire to deepen their understanding of their ancestral roots and embrace the rich history of Chaco Canyon.

Immersed in Nature’s Majesty

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the awe-inspiring beauty of Chaco Canyon. Surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs and ancient ruins, we embarked on guided hikes, tracing the footsteps of our ancestors. As we walked along the trails, the land whispered its stories, revealing the resilience and wisdom of those who once called this place home.

Connecting with Ancestral Wisdom

Together, we explored the intricate architecture, celestial alignments, and cultural significance of the Chacoan people. Guided by knowledgeable experts, we delved into the mysteries of the Great Houses, kivas, and petroglyphs, marveling at the ingenuity and craftsmanship of our forebearers.

Igniting Curiosity and Pride

The trip sparked a fire within our youth, igniting a renewed sense of pride in their indigenous heritage. They asked thought-provoking questions, engaged in deep conversations, and shared personal reflections on the profound impact of this experience. Witnessing their curiosity and enthusiasm filled our hearts with hope for the future.

Fostering Community and Connection

Beyond the remarkable sights and stories, this journey allowed us to build bonds of friendship and solidarity. Youth from different indigenous communities came together, fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration. They shared stories, dances, and songs, strengthening the ties that connect us as indigenous peoples.

A Journey of Transformation

Our trip to Chaco Canyon was more than just an excursion; it was a transformative experience. We witnessed the power of reconnecting with our ancestral lands, igniting a passion for cultural preservation, and inspiring the next generation of indigenous leaders.

Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future

As we bid farewell to Chaco Canyon, we carry with us a renewed commitment to honor the wisdom of our ancestors and protect the sacred lands entrusted to us. We are confident that the experiences and connections forged on this trip will shape the futures of these remarkable young individuals, empowering them to be advocates for their communities and champions of indigenous rights.
